Recycled Post: So There's This Boy and This Girl.

(This post was originally shared as part of a blog tour over at Sassy Book Lovers in 2011)

So There Was This Boy And This Girl

Introduction to Darcy and Mason
I think it’s safe to mention when an author starts writing a new story, they fall in love with their characters. I can say this because that’s definitely what happened with me. From the very beginning, Darcy has impressed me and Mason … well he flat out makes me swoon. Being able to share their story has been so much fun and it’s easy to get caught up in – the love and respect they have for each other and of course, the incredible passion. It’s every romance readers dream!

Impending Doom - Food for Thought.

I think I've just been reminded of a great life lesson.

I've been sitting outside on my patio, watching the dark clouds in the distance. They looked so black and ominous--like they could suck the light from the day. Whoever was experiencing them was getting rain and thunder and all I could think was, "Wow, when they get here, it's going to be intense."

Needless to say, they're almost here, but my first impression is SO different. The darkness isn't so oppressive. The clouds aren't so black. Yes, it's still a storm, but it doesn't seem so BIG as when I saw it on the horizon.

Isn't that how life is? Sometimes we see things coming for us and we panic. We become afraid of the "battle" approaching and worry it'll consume us. Little do we realize that while it might still be a challenge, it isn't always "doom and gloom." And I'll even admit it, there's BEAUTY in the way lighting changes the world surrounding us. There's grace to be found in weathering the storm and realizing there was no reason to shrink backward. Even as the wind picks up and thunder rumbles loudly, you can still remain unmoved--strong enough to face it.

And yep, any chance you get--dance in the rain!

Enjoy your day <3

Happy Anniversary To Me!!

Let me tell you all a story. (sorry it's a long post but hey, there's a surprise or two at the end!* Feel free to share.

Once upon a time ... THREE YEARS AGO to be exact, a hopeful young woman sat with her BFF late one night and wished she could share a short story she'd written with the world. She was TERRIFIED, but her friend whispered, "Be brave. Do it!" Together, they created a cover and formatted the story, uploading it in the wee hours of July 8th, 2011. No one knew it was coming, but when the newly published author announced on her blog and Facebook "SURPRISE!!", everyone rushed to read about the young werewolf, Darcy Matthews, and her Alpha fiancé, Mason O'Connor. The young author was so excited and proud that day as she watched her dreams become a reality, the result of her dream hitting numerous bestsellers list. Little did she know what the future held in store for her.

If she had, she wouldn't have waited so long to publish!

Wanna know who that young woman was? Hahaha YES, that was ME! Three years ago TODAY I bravely published the first in the Mystic Wolves series and had NO CLUE it would explode into something so wonderfully amazing! I'm about to publish my TENTH book, working on my eleventh and twelfth as we speak, and have had so many AMAZING experiences that it has quite literally CHANGED MY LIFE. So much that I met up with someone I knew many, many years ago and they didn't recognize me.

These past three years have taught me so much - to never give up, to follow your heart, to be brave even when things are scary, to dream big, to never let someone else dictate your happiness, to not hide your talents, and most of all, embrace your own awesome!

To celebrate, I wanted to first say a huge THANK YOU. It doesn't matter whether you've been with me from the beginning or whether you've joined my journey throughout different parts of the years. What's important is you're here and I'm grateful for all your support! Thank you for loving my characters and books so passionately. Thank you for asking for more. Thank you for making me laugh, smile, cry, and strive harder. THANK YOU!

In honor of today, I have TWO gifts: first is a SIGNED paperback of the winner's choice. The second is a custom swag piece that will be a SURPRISE (which is perfect because this whole MARVELOUS adventure started with one!) To enter: comment below and let me know about something that's changed YOUR life. Big or small, let's celebrate it

Ready, set, GO!

The Mystic Wolves Series Insight.

I just realized something.

When I first started the Mystic Wolves series, it was never that . . . a series. It began as an 8000 word short story based on a dream I turned paranormal that would be part of an anthology.

8000 words.

That's hard to believe as I currently work on the #6 book and have 18-20 full length novels planned out. That's NOT including more memory collections, spin offs for characters, and the eventual Enforcers series.

8000 words.

I've published 368, 890 words to date about Mason, Darcy, Devlin, and Daniel. That's a HUGE difference! Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to explode the way it has or for it to be loved as deeply by everyone. It blows my mind.

And how do I thank you all? CLIFFHANGERS! I guess that's the way I share my gratitude, huh? LOL

Just wanted to share <3

The Character's Journey.

One of the questions I get asked a lot is if there's pieces of me within my stories. I think as a writer, it's hard not to do it, but make no mistake . . . each character has his or her own journey to take. They may share similar quirks or characteristics, but it's them, not me, in the book.

That's the beauty of fiction. It's a make believe world, even with realistic themes, where the hero or heroine is able to experience situations, find love, make mistakes, face challenges, and conquer the world. Because there's so many different possibilities in real life, the same is true within each story.

What you do or choose in your world, may not be the same in theirs.

As a reader, I've always felt it's not my place to push my expectations, judgments, and beliefs on the character, and I've taken that same stance as an author. I've made it a priority to remain sensitive to their voices so I stay true to their stories. It's their process, their journey, their outcome to reach. It doesn't matter if it drives me nuts or whether I would've handled it differently. There's a reason why each hero and heroine makes the choices they do -- real or not--they've had different lives.

If a character has served in the military, the way they view the world may not be the same.
If a character has lived through abuse, the way they respond to the world may not be different.
If a character chooses to give a second chance …
If a character doesn't see there's a problem just yet …
If a character fights even though things are hopeless
If a character hasn't faced similar challenges to the reader …

See the pattern?

One of the challenges as a reader is the ability to leave behind our own prejudices/experiences/beliefs and simply become a part of someone else's. It's interesting to see whether you'd do the same in their shoes. Maybe you'd do something different. But who's right? Who's wrong?

The question is: does there have to be one?

Characters may be an author's imagination put on paper, but they can represent the very best and the very worst of what it is to be human. Even when they're supernatural, each nature is diverse and beautiful. Don't get so caught up in trying to put characters into boxes, that you miss the beauty of the story. While there are books out there that don't resonate with every reader, and you need to stay true to you, let each character do the same. . . be them.

Let them tell you their story.

I promise you, it'll be worth it.

O.M.G. You Write Cliffhangers?

I've been meaning to write this post for a while now but always seem to get distracted … oh, look …  SQUIRREL! While some readers love a good cliffhanger, there's also a bunch who say it drives them bonkers. Whether it's because they don't like being left hanging, they're upset that it's a marketing ploy, or they're wanting a better resolution to the story, there's definitely a love/hate thing going on in the book world when it comes to it.

So knowing that, why the heck do I write them?

Good question. Did you know that I have my very own love/hate relationship with cliffhangers? I'm the reader who HATES being left there with my heart pounding and a bazillion thoughts racing through my mind: What just happened? Is there pages missing? How can the author be so cruel? There have been times I've wanted to hunt the author down and shake them, beg them to alleviate my agony of not knowing, but isn't that a sign of something GOOD?

When you're dying to know what happens next … when you are all tied up in knots and wonderful emotions, it means you've been captured. You've been sucked into a world that's entertained you and taken you on a journey. That's the whole point of reading, right? At least, that's why I do it. So as much as I HATE that damn cliffhanger, I secretly ADORE it.

Flip the coin over now and let me change hats. I'm no longer the reader but an author. I'm not going to lie. When I finish each Mystic Wolves story, this is my reaction …

I'm counting on you screaming. I want you cussing me out. I want you desperate to find out what's happening with Darcy, Mason, Devlin, and Daniel. It means I've done my job. It means that I've told the kind of story that captivated you. Do I get some kind of satisfaction from it? Hmmm, maybe a little.  Okay, A LOT. As much as I love and hate cliffhangers, they do serve a purpose. Believe me, even though I know what's going to happen throughout the Mystic Wolves series, some things are still hidden from me. Sometimes I won't know an aspect until I type it.

So while some may hate the series and vow never to read another book again, I want to thank those who are brave enough to carry on with me, to those who have fallen in love with the characters as much as I have. The series was set up to be a continuation--meaning as one book ends, the very next line in the following book carries on from where it left off. I can't promise that each ending will get easier to bear, but I can say it's worth the ride. I have so many amazing things in store for you all.

The Mystic Wolves has a projected 12-13 books planned, with a spin-off series also in the works. What began as a three book series has evolved into something beautiful, amazing, and beyond my hopes and dreams. That's because of you, the reader. Thank you so much for all your support … it means the world to me!

Okay, enough chatting, let me get back to plotting my next cliff hanger … it's a DOOZY!

Happy swooning!

Story Insight: Savage Possession

I get asked a lot whether there's pieces of me in the characters and stories I write. The answer is definitely YES and sometimes it's not on purpose. Reading through what I'd recently written on Savage Possession, I came across this snippet and it instantly put a lump in my throat. Sometimes things happen in our lives that leave us feeling like Darcy does … broken, faulty, incomplete. It's easy to believe we'd done something wrong or that we've failed. Just remember--things happen for a reason and it NEVER changes who we truly are or how LOVED we are by those around us. Don't let disappointment and fear rock your foundation.

It's fitting then that I have Don't Give Up by Peter Gabriel on this story's playlist.

Don't give up
You still have us
Don't give up
We don't need much of anything
Don't give up
'cause somewhere there's a place
Where we belong

Rest your head
You worry too much
It's going to be alright
When times get rough
You can fall back on us
Don't give up
Please don't give up.

I LOVE the version by Pink and John Legend:

Happy Friday, everyone!
Keep being BRAVE and CONQUER your world!

Rolling With Life's Punches.

Thought for the day:

It's a human thing to wonder why things happen, to try and allocate each situation into boxes: good, bad, frustrating, sad. It's easy to ask "Why me?" or say "That's not fair." And honestly, you'd be right. Life isn't fair, but it doesn't mean its time to wrap yourself up in doubt, discouragement, and negativity. Yes, sometimes it SUCKS … sucks HARD … it's tempting to stand there and shake your fist at the sky. But it's just PART of the picture. Each situation can either make or break you … destroy or define you. You can react angrily or act gracefully and just "roll with the punches!" There are so many opportunities to grow and find joy--even when you're neck deep in mud, scared of the dark, confused and disappointed. Look for the positive … the lesson … whatever it takes to survive that moment so you can continue to celebrate all of lives blessings. It doesn't matter who you are … everyone has the potential for greatness. We all can reach for our dreams and see our wishes come true. EVERYONE.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

Live. Laugh. Swoon. OFTEN.

Best Paranormal Book 2013

Look at the honor the Mystic Wolves series received! Forever Changed, book 4 in the paranormal romance series, won BEST PARANORMAL BOOK 2013 in the Young Adult & Teen Reader Literary Awards!!

This seriously makes me smile! Mason and Darcy were also up for BEST COUPLE as well as BEST COVER. Thank you so much, everyone, for loving this series and all your support. It's a scary process to write, and put yourself out there. I love each and every one of my books … my hope is always that others will enjoy them too.

So, again, THANK YOU!!
